Columbus Day

My first initial thought about Columbus Day is that Columbus was a great noble man who was trying to prove that he was right and that his theory about Earth and its circumference is closer than what it actually is. To prove his theory, he told to the king and queens that he would visit India. However what he did not expected is a huge land mass that was in between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean, which of course is America in our present days. The fact that Columbus uses Arawaks as slaves and treated them brutally is frightening. After all the hospitality that the Arawaks people have given them, shocked me how cruel Columbus can be. Imagine, if some stranger asks for your hospitality and help and in the end the stranger torments and kill you. How would that make you feel? I bet you would feel terrible. To me, he was no longer noble and a hero who found America, but to me a selfish person who only cares about himself. However, it depends on each individual’s thoughts, and can be debatable. As time progresses, and more evidences have proven that Columbus was not the person we were thought he would be.
