Advertisement Analysis

(from http://www.usageorge.com/Wallpapers/Commercial/wallpaper/Coke-Polar-Bear.jpg)

Aesthetic Approach:
My first impression when I saw this Coca-Cola advertisement is that I think it is a humorous advertisement. There is a polar bear family, which the parent threats the cubs by giving them Coca Cola to drink. The tone and atmosphere of this piece is the relationship of the member that gives you the feelings of warmth. The atmosphere at the back is night with twinkle stars, which gives you the feelings of peaceful and quiet. The Coca-Cola advertisement use polar bear instead of human, and they use a polar bear to indicate that its cold in the North Pole just like coca cola. The idea that the advertiser trying to convey is that Coca-Cola is an enjoyable drinks that everyone can have, through an image of a mother bear, two cubs and one is drinking Coca-Cola.

Critical Literary Approach:
The view that is being represented is the view from Coca-Cola. The intentions or the messages of this image are to being the feeling and the ambiance to the consumers that Coca-Cola is “cool”. The word “cool” has this case has both meanings. One of the meanings of “cool” means cold because it takes place in North Pole (polar bears’ habitat), while another meaning means looking-good. The cub on the left of the image has a facial expression of desire which when compare to the cub on the right, drinking the Coca-Cola, can easily see that the cub on the left wanted to drink the Coca Cola. The irony in this advertisement is that mammal animals feed their young’s or their babies with milk, but in the picture the mother bear is feeding her child with a bottle of Coca-Cola. This irony can be deeply interpreted that Coca-Cola is available to all ages and that it is not a harmful drink. The reason why polar bear is used as a presenter in this advertisement is because polar bear lives in cold environment and that they are also cute as well .The “cute” image also helps the advertisement look friendly and amusing. Meanwhile, the view that is being left out is the consequences and the effect of drinking carbonated drinks. This is probably because the company wanted to promote their sales and does not want the image look bad.
