Blog Response 1984 Chapter 5 – Paranoia

There are many signs that Winston had showed paranoia in Chapter 5. For example, he had a constant fear that the thought police would find out about him and catches him. He was afraid that he would be wiping out of the human database as if he never exist. This frightens him because he, himself, can’t stop thinking about revolution or the old ways. When his friend, Syme talks about how soon the language of the Old Ways are being purged out, there would no longer be words that express freedom, rights, or anything that goes against the government party. He knew that his friend, Syme would soon be vaporized because he is open about his intelligent and that the “Big Brother” does not like it. The constant fear and annoyance of something, or paranoia, existed in everyone and everywhere.  Everyone has guilt, and being scared and afraid of getting caught would show symptoms of paranoia. In present days a lot of things can make you become afraid. And when you’re afraid you could be in paranoia. Some examples would be ghosts, war, or even a bully at school could make you feel uneasy. When you’re in paranoia, you wouldn't be able to stand still and wait, you would tremble yourself just to know that you’re safe. However, no one knows that you are in constant fear of something or someone unless they recognize that your symptoms. It is best not to show any symptoms or signs, and by this no one would know.

  1. I totally agree that Winston was paranoid in Chapter 5, since he was afraid of the Thought Police. Anyone who seemed smart was to be vaporized if you were in Winston's society. I also agree with your response on how paranoia affects the contemporary era. Paranoia could be seen in school, wars, and while encountering ghosts. Paranoia is often a concealed feeling that can only be seen if one recognizes the symptoms of it.

  2. I see your viewpoint on the paranoia between Winston and the society around him. People who were smart were definitely going to be vaporized, for fear of outsmarting the government themselves, the government is most likely going to eliminate a threat to them as quickly as possible. Paranoia is definitely around us everywhere and is also affecting the way we think. Paranoia is definitely seen in the way that people emotionally and physically act.

  3. I agree with your viewpoint that fear cause paranoia. As long as you have fear in your mind, you would be annoyed and disturbed. The example from the book, where Winston is in constant fear or paranoid that someone would find out about his journal. Also he is paranoid that his friend would be vaporized because he was thinking about the things that the government does not wanted him to. I like how you mention that "it is best not to show any symptoms or signs, and by this no one would know".
